A Biography
Joyce Dewitt is most widely known to audiences for her starring role as Janet Wood in the ABC hit series “Three’s Company.” She also has an extensive theatrical background, working both as an actress and director in a stage career that spans over fifty years. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, Joyce is one of four children. She spent her childhood years divided between Wheeling and Speedway, Indiana. Joyce first appeared on stage at the age of thirteen. While attending university, she worked as secretary until her television debut on “Baretta” with Robert Blake.
Joyce has starred in theatrical productions of everything including Moliere’s Tartuffe, Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Euripides’s Medea as well as the popular comedies like Sam Bobrick’s Remember Me, Neil Simon’s Star Spangled Girl, as well as the hilarious British farce, Noises Off with Pat Paulsen.
Her long list of starring roles in musicals and plays includes the premiere of Comedy is Hard! with Micky Dolenz and It’s Connecticut written by “The Simpsons” creator/producer/writer Mike Reiss, Off-Broadway Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating and Marriage!, the Canadian Premiere of Dinner with Friends, A Scattered Smothered and Covered Christmas Musical, the North American premiere of the Australian comedy Daylight Savings, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, South Pacific, Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity, Oklahoma, Chapter Two, Middle of the Night, Love Letters, The Crucible, Remember Me, A Hatful of Rain, Desire Under the Elms, The Mikado, Li’l Abner, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Peter Pan, Brigadoon, All the Way Home, All the Way Home, The Tempest, The Impossible Years, Dracula: An Original Rock Musical, The Vagina Monologues, Stop the World I Want To Get Off, Same Time Next Year, Married Alive, Leader of the Pack, They’re Playing Our Song, Hats, All Shook Up, revivals of Cole Porter’s Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, Mama Rose in Gypsy, and the mythical Olympus on My Mind for which she completed the cast recording – her first Broadway album. J Cast Productions cast Joyce in the touring production of TV Hit Parade with Adrian Zmed, Barry Williams, and MacKenzie Phillips.
She has made numerous guest appearances on popular television programs including “Hope Island,” “Finder of Lost Loves,” “The Love Boat,” “The Ropers,” “Supertrain,” “The Osmonds,” “Cybill,” “Twitch City,” “Living Single,” and “Baretta.” She has also starred in the television movies-of-the-week including, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, Spring Fling, Steve Martin: Comedy is Not Pretty, and With This Ring. Joyce co-produced and hosted the television special “Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Three’s Company.” In fall 2014, she appeared in the television movie-of-the-week My Boyfriends’ Dogs starring along side Erika Christensen and Jesse Hutch.She has also been seen singing and dancing on numerous specials, including “The Perry Como Christmas Special,” “The Steve Martin Special,” “The Cheryl Ladd Special: Souvenirs,” and “John Ritter, Being of Sound Mind and Body.” She has had the pleasure of appearing with other wonderful talents such as Greer Garson, Ann Miller, Bill Cosby, Anne Murphy, and Tony Randall.
Joyce’s film credits include Snapshot with Angela Little and Zach McGowan, Rock Story with Eric Roberts and Dominique Swain, The Great Fight, Failing Better Now, Call of the Wild, Brandon Fowler’s 18, and Airplane II: The Sequel.
Joyce holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Ball State University and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from UCLA, where she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship.
Joyce is a passionate activist and philanthropist and has had the good fortune to work with such wonderful human beings such as Valerie Harper and Dennis Weaver, whose dedication to ending hunger and homelessness in our world and support of environmental issues is boundless. She participated with members of the House and Senate at the Capitol Hill Forum on Hunger and Homelessness and has hosted presentations for the Family Assistance Program of Hollywood. She is most grateful for having been allowed the privilege of hosting the International Awards Ceremony at the White House for the Presidential End Hunger Awards, as well as, co-hosting, with Jeff Bridges, the World Food Day Gala at the Kennedy Center. She has also had the great pleasure of participating in Broadway Cares.
